Is your packaging recyclable?Updated 6 months ago
Our boxes and informational inserts are recyclable in all curbside recycling programs and are also made from recycled material.
Our bags are not recyclable through curbside recycling programs and require special handling to reuse. We have designed our bags to use less plastic waste while working towards better options as packaging and recycling technology improves.
Shelf-stable food products like dog food require materials that block moisture and oxygen as well as provide enough strength to support 5+ pounds of food. Unfortunately plastic, aluminum, and glass are the only commercially-viable materials with these properties at the moment. We chose to use a plastic barrier layer in our bags because plastic offers energy and greenhouse gas emission savings compared to producing and shipping aluminum or glass. However, plastic (and particularly the plastic lamination used in flexible packaging) is more difficult to recycle and is not accepted by most curbside recycling companies.
We significantly reduce plastic consumption in our packaging by using kraft paper rather than polyethylene as our outer layer. Paper is a renewable resource and reduces the use of petroleum-based plastic by ~40% compared to a traditional PET plastic pet food bag. We are also working with packaging companies to support the development of new technology to produce recyclable or compostable barrier materials from renewable resources.
